Running with the Beatles

When I started this here tumblr account, it was primarily for me to log my running workouts. I got lazy, fat and out of shape and next thing you know I’m reposting proof that Keanu Reeves is a Vampire. Well that and a crap ton of adorable pictures of my son. I have been without a job for the past month and during that time I’ve done a little soul searching to find what I care about. Faith and Family are the main two, but running is up there too.

When I run, more often than not, I listen to music. I do this because I need something to keep my mind off the road. I also do it because I love music. I thought instead of just sharing my run, I would share my playlist as well.

Since I’ve been getting back to the basics, I thought I’d take the same approach with my playlist. The Beatles are one of my favorite bands. I love almost all of their music, but I especially love their early rock and roll covers like Money (Thats What I Want) and Roll Over Beethoven. I love the raw energy. I figured a playlist based on these songs would be perfect.

Tonight’s run was a 5K (3.1 mile) build up. first mile = 10 min. second mile = 8:45. third mile 7:00.

The start of my run was Sgt. Pepper’s Loney Hearts Club Band original then reprised, followed by Come Together, all songs from later albums, but with the same spirit. This was during my slow mile which I finished off with “I saw Her Standing There”

Mile two started with “Rock and Roll Music”, “Twist and Shout” then “Roll Over Beethoven.” All pretty upbeat and very easy to run at 8:45/mile pace while listening.

“Money (That’s What I Want)” ended mile two and started mile 3. I love this song! it’s so gritty. Intro w/ just piano and bass sounds awesome in the head phones. The next song of the fast mile was “Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey” the Beatles do a great job channeling Little richard and keeping me running. The run finished with “I’ve Got a Feeling.” The version from Let It Be Naked. Fitting as when they recorded it they were getting back to the basics too.
